If you like, it is possible to spend more days in this magnificent area. To create a tour for 7, 8 or 9 days is not a problem. For a long 10 day trip around the Kebnekaise mountains, we suggest the Panoramic Expedition. 

Tour Plan (6 days, 5 nights)

Day 1: Nikkaluokta – Vistas (35 KM)

We start our tour in Nikkaluokta. We either meet your here in the morning or we pick you up along the way (Kiruna). We will discuss your options with the booking. 

The dogs are happy to stretch their legs after the long drive. We start the tour in the Vistas valley, along partly open streams and between high mountains. It is an area where usually many moose are spotted. We hope to see them, but that they stay far enough so they don’t bother the dogs. The trip ends at the Vistas cabin, where we spend the night.

Day 2: Vistas – Alesjaure (20 KM)

We harness the huskies for another exiting day. We travel north and leave the small trees behind us, we get into more exposed and rough terrain. At the end of the Vistas valley a steep climb waits for us. We have to run and push the sleds, which is heavy but there is no other way. Once we reached the top, we only have to go down, to the cabin in Alesjaure, where we spend the night. In the sauna we can relax the sore legs.

Day 3: Alesjaure – Sälka (25 KM)

Today we travel south, following the Kings Trail, Sweden’s most famous hiking trail. We follow the Tjäktja pass, and are in very exposed terrain. Hopefully we have clear weather so we can enjoy the amazing views! We keep on going south and end the journey today at the cabins in Sälka. These cabins are very beautifully situated in the middle of the Swedish mountain range.

Day 4: Sälka daytour (up to 35 KM)

By staying here an extra night, we have the possibility to explore the beautiful surroundings, either by dogsled or snowshoes. If we decide to go sledding we suggest going towards Nallo, and if we feel like it, even to Unna Räita. It is a tough climb to 1250 meters, but we assure you it is worth it. Here we can enjoy lunch and give the huskies a big snack. The way back is of course a lot easier, only going downhill to the cabin in Sälka. A nice afternoon in the sauna will be well deserved!

Day 5: Sälka – Singi (15 KM + optional extra)

After breakfast for us and the dogs we make ourselves ready for the trip south. We follow the valley to Singi, a junction from where trails go in either direction and where the cabin is beautifully situated. Since this is only a short distance we can choose  to steer the dogs further west towards Hukejaure or south towards Kaitumjaure through a beautiful tundra landscape. We ourselves decide when to turn around again to the cabin. With good weather we can even add a loop around one of the mountains south-east of Singi.

Day 6: Singi – Nikkaluokta (34 KM)

Unfortunately this is the last day on the sled. We go up a hill one last time, before we leave the high mountains behind us and see the first trees again. We follow the trails down towards Nikkaluokta, the end of our sledding adventure. 

At the end-point we thank our dogs and give them a well deserved rest in their dogboxes. Together we drive back to Kiruna, where we enjoy a nice (early) dinner together. Unfortunately by then it is really time to say goodbye, we drop you off at your accommodation before we head home to our kennel. 

Tour Plan (extra days)

The possibilities in this area are endless so if you want to add one or more days, drive longer distances or visit different cabins we have several suggestions or can look at the possibilities together. 

Examples:
– Add a night in Unna Allakas, close to the Norwegian boarder.
– Add one or two nights in Hukejaure, where you can gaze at a very different moon-like landscape. 
– Add a night in Kaitumjaure, where less travelers are going to.

It is also possible to go on day-trips and explore some parts of this tour even more.

Be aware!

Sometimes weather conditions make this tour more challenging, and we need to adapt. Safety comes first, so in extreme conditions we might need to take a less exposed route, turn around to the last cabin, do a shorter distance, or maybe we don’t leave the cabin at all and stay there another night. We aim to do the planned route, but need to stay flexible.
Also, don’t book your flight directly the day after we return. Take an optional day somewhere before you fly home, so if the weather is extremely bad on the last day, we have a possibility to sit it out.

Because you are driving your own sled, you have to have some basic fitness level. It requires that you have good balance and are fit. In up-hills and heavy snow conditions you have to help your dogs! We are going to the mountains, so the hills can be long and the sleds are heavy. Also you will be physically active outside in the cold for many hours a day.

The program is moderate to challenging. This will depend on the route and the snow and weather conditions during the tour. In the mountains we are totally exposed to the weather, and the weather can change very fast. We can have sunny and easy days, but we can also get heavy snow-storms where we can’t see more than a meter in front of us. In those cases we might need to turn around or pitch a tent. You need to be able to help out and follow instructions, even though these situations might feel quite scary. 

We prefer that you have previous dogsledding experience, but it is not necessary. 

We offer a free half-day huskytour at our homebase so you get to know your dogs and the routine before heading out into the mountains. We highly recommend to use this option in case you have never been on a dog-sled before.

For safety reasons we have set a minimum age of 16 years to join a mountain tour.

The Cabin

The wilderness cabins are basic but cozy. Most of them don’t have electricity or running water. We make a fire to get warm, we get water from a lake or river or melt snow and we use candles to see something. We sleep in (bunk)beds in a shared room and the toilet is outside in a separate building.  In some of the cabins there is also a sauna available where you can get a real Swedish experience and wash yourselves. 

Most of the cabins are from the Swedish Tourist Organisation, where it is possible that we meet other people and share the cabin.

We do ask you to be part of the team and help out with the chores. Examples: making a fire, chopping wood, feeding the dogs, getting water, help with making the dinner, doing dishes, etc. These things are part of the adventure and the more you get involved, the greater the experience.
