Mountain Tour – Lakes & Mountains

We start the tour on several big lakes, surrounded by mountains. After a few days we will climb higher into these mountains, close to Norway and Sweden’s biggest glacier. We will go through a lot of variety within nature during this trip!

Duration
6 days, 5 nights

If you would like to extend this tour, we can combine it with (parts of) the tour Laponia Adventure. We have suggestions for 7, 9 or 10 days dogsledding.

Tour Plan (6 days, 5 nights)

Day 1: Årrenjarka – Västerfjäll (42 KM)

We start our tour in Årrenjarka fjälby.
We either meet your here in the morning, we pick you up along the way (Boden or Jokkmokk) or you took the transfer together with us because you stayed close to the Yellow Snow kennel and already enjoyed a dogsledding tour at our basecamp. We will discuss your options with the booking.

The dogs are happy to stretch their legs after the long drive and the first kilometers are quite easy. We slide south over some big lakes and through the forest. Slowly we gain height until we reach Västerfjäll, a small sami village, where we spend the night.

Day 2: Västerfjäll – Miekak (35 KM)

After a nice breakfast for dogs and human we pack the sleds and head west. We travel mainly over big frozen lakes surrounded by mountains. In bad weather we are completely exposed to the wind. We drive to Miekak, a small fishing camp next to the Miekak lakes. Here we have the possibility to light the sauna and relax the muscles.

Day 3: Miekak – Pieskehaure (42 KM)

We harness the huskies for another exiting day. Today we start the tour on some big lakes again, but finally head into these mountains we have been looking at. We drive north towards Pieskehaure, which lies close to the biggest glacier of Sweden: Sulitjelma. Enjoy the views towards these big mountains and warm up in the sauna.

Day 4: Pieskehaure – Vaimok (18 KM + daytour)

We wake up in this beautifully located wilderness cabin and after we have taken care of dogs, breakfast and cleaning we prepare the huskies. Today we go even higher into the mountains and we make a lot of vertical meters. The distance is not very long though, and if you feel fit and the weather allows it, we can take a different route, where we have to climb even more and make our own trails! We will feel as if we are on top of the world, the views are amazing! Our end goal is Vaimok, where we can rest again. In bad weather we are very exposed in this area and we dig some bunkers for the dogs.

Day 5: Vaimok – Kvikkjokk (45 KM)

Today we leave the high mountains behind us and all the meters that we have been going up the last days, we go down today. With nearly empty sledges this means that we spend a lot of time on the break, enjoying the amazing views into the Tarra valley. In Kvikkjokk we reach some civilization: electricity, mobile reception, a shower and probably some other travelers. Kvikkjokk is one of the oldest mountain villages in Lapland!

Day 6: Kvikkjokk – Årrenjarka (20 or 45 KM)

Unfortunately this is the last day on the sled. Depending on the conditions and how you and the dogs feel there are two options to get back to Årrenjarka. We either take an easy morning and drive the direct route over the lake or we wake up early and choose to go for a tough day-tour. For this tour we have to prepare ourselves for a steep climb, but the views from the top are worth it! After enjoying some kilometres above the treeline we drive down again until we reach Årrenjarka, the end of our sledding adventure.

At the end-point we thank our dogs and give them a well deserved rest in their dogboxes. We enjoy a nice dinner together, either at Årrenjarka (if you stay there) or somewhere along the way back. There are several options that we can discuss with the booking.

Be aware!

Sometimes weather conditions make this tour more challenging, and we need to adapt. Safety comes first, so in extreme conditions we might need to take a less exposed route, turn around to the last cabin, do a shorter distance, or maybe we don’t leave the cabin at all and stay there another night. We aim to do the planned route, but need to stay flexible.
Also, don’t book your flight directly the day after we return. Take an optional day somewhere before you fly home, so if the weather is extremely bad on the last day, we have a possibility to sit it out.

Not included

  • Travel arrangements from your home to Swedish Lapland. We recommend airport Luleå.
  • Extra night(s) before and after the tour
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Travel insurance
  • Transfers (from/to start of the tour). You can drive with us free of charge if we don’t need to drive extra kilometers

Because you are driving your own sled, you have to have some basic fitness level. It requires that you have good balance and are fit. In up-hills and heavy snow conditions you have to help your dogs! We are going to the mountains, so the hills can be long and the sleds are heavy. Also you will be physically active outside in the cold for many hours a day.

The program is moderate, but can be challenging. This will depend on the snow and weather conditions during the tour. In the mountains we are totally exposed to the weather, and the weather can change very fast. We can have sunny and easy days, but we can also get heavy snow-storms where we can’t see more than a meter in front of us. In those cases we might need to turn around or pitch a tent. You need to be able to help out and follow instructions, even though these situations might feel quite scary.

We prefer that you have previous dogsledding experience, but it is not necessary.
For safety reasons we have set a minimum age of 16 years to join a mountain tour.

You can always contact us with questions.

The Cabin

The wilderness cabins are basic but cozy. Most of them don’t have electricity or running water. We make a fire to get warm, we get water from a well or melt snow and we use candles to see something. We sleep in (bunk)beds in a shared room and the toilet is outside in a separate building.  In some of the cabins there is also a sauna available where you can get a real Swedish experience and wash yourselves.

We do ask you to be part of the team and help out with the chores. Examples: making a fire, chopping wood, feeding the dogs, getting water, help with making the dinner, doing dishes, etc. These things are part of the adventure and the more you get involved, the greater the experience.
